Being so close to Durham - about a 30 minute drive - Zack and I took a small day trip and headed to Duke University! I didn't really know what to expect...I know they are usually good in basketball?? but that's about it. We showed up and wow! The. Campus. Is. Beautiful. Trees were everywhere, the buildings were made from gorgeous stone work - almost medieval but with a more classic beauty - and Duke Chapel was in the center of it all. Before we hit the heart of the campus grounds, we saw a garden - Sarah P. Duke Gardens - which looked nice and we quickly realized how massive it was! It has different sections - a moss garden, Japanese garden, ponds, amphitheater.. it just kept going. Turns out it's around 55 acres with what felt like a million paths to take. On a day like today, it was the perfect time to visit with great weather and so many trees blossoming...so so pretty.
The gardens eventually emptied us into the rest of campus. The grounds were pretty with grassy lawns and magnolias and oaks lining the sidewalks. Fun fact for the day - the library has spin bikes with a table top so students can workout in the library while studying countless hours! Sounds like a great idea right?? Too bad no one was using them.. Maybe getting all sweating and panting really hard in a quiet library isn't the most appealing thing for a student hah.
We headed to the Chapel after...but it took us forever to get there. I think we found ourselves at the back of the library?? maybe?? but there was not clear path at first to the chapel. We could see the bell tower (it was so close) but we kept finding dead end after dead end ha..clearly we needed a map, but hey, we got a see more of the pretty campus! Eventually we found it! The inside was amazing. The stained glass windows covered the walls and they were...how do I put it.. busy? The colors were so vibrant and there was a lot going on but it looked really cool.
Commentary by Z: Something I find strange but also appreciate is that Catholic chapels just have their front doors open and let people wander in all the time and take pictures. I get that the idea is to always be welcoming, which is cool, but it's gotta be annoying for people that want some quiet prayer time to have to deal with tourists!
If you head east and maybe a little north from Durham, Falls Lake is a must see! Being that it's winter, we did't have to pay an entrance fee..but the fees during summer are pretty reasonable something like $6 a car. It was a little windy, but we had the place _almost_ to ourselves! There's something so amazing about a lake being surrounded by woods - everything seems more peaceful and inviting. We have a kayak (not canoe! I always call it a canoe for who knows what reason) that we did not bring on this trip but now I am kicking myself that we didn't - the price we pay for our smaller car with waaaay better gas mileage! From our vantage point we only saw a fraction of the lake and our kayak would have given us a chance to see more. I definitely want to come back!!
Commentary by Z: Driving 4477 miles (our total so far) in the Wrangler with a kayak on top has 0 appeal to me.
Final thoughts about Raleigh? We love the area! They have great parks and outdoor trails for all ages which is pretty awesome. Growing up in California and Colorado, we both love the outdoors and this city definitely has the outdoorsy vibe! They have tons of food options in the heart of the city and even in the suburbs which makes it convenient and exciting to try new places and not our everyday chains (no fear though, they have chains too!). We wish we could have taken more time to go to the nature preserves and other hiking trails near Cary but once again we never seem to have enough time! I think we could both see ourselves living here one day and really loving it, but for now we will just have the memory and joy that Raleigh gave us!

Zack and I love the mountains - hiking, camping, anything that brings us closer to nature. Raleigh doesn't have mountains but what Raleigh does have is plenty of woods and places to walk and hike..or nature walk (not a lot of dramatic elevation change compared to Utah ha). Today we explored Yates Mill - one of the oldest buildings in the area now turned into a historical site and state park. The old mill was once used for grinding corn, wheat, and lumber which we learned all about in the visitor center! The grounds are gorgeous with trails that not only took us to the mill but then allowed us to walk around the lake.

Side note - While we were taking a nice walk I remembered that I get a little jumpy....what I mean is that I heard something rustle in the bushes and jumped a little. Guess I need to walk in nature more because that shouldn't have phased me... :)
Commentary by Z: Pretty sure she only confessed that just so I couldn't reveal it myself and do smug commentary about it. So instead of that, I'll just say that I'm torn between wishing I could have had a lifestyle like they must have had on the mill - working hard and building things and swimming in the pond on the weekends - and being happy that I can work on a computer inside my air conditioned house and watch Netflix with my wife at night.
Zack is making fun of me...very funny ha
After the mill, we headed over to Pullen Park which is right outside of downtown. There's a cute little train that families can ride, a pond with a boat dock, paddle boats, a playground, and a lot of grassy space! It would be the perfect place to for an afternoon with family or friends! We really loved it and bonus - it was free (unless you wanted to ride the train)!
Before the sun set, we headed to the Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Apex. We walked the grounds and enjoyed the peace and quiet for a bit but eventually got hungry..so naturally we headed to dinner! Tonight, we chose a place called Los Tres - Mexican food! I got steak tacos and Zack got steak nachos! I love Mexican food because they usually bring out chips and salsa to snack on...I always have a hard time not eating all of them and getting full before my meal shows up.
Commentary by Z: Why is it that everyone serves Carne Asada Nachos instead of Carne Asada fries? I swear they're 10x harder to find outside of California.
Tomorrow is our last full day in Raleigh before we move on to Virginia! We'll probably go up and see Duke University and get our last taste of the city. See you tomorrow!
The next stop on our trip? Raleigh, North Carolina...but more specifically the city of Apex. Apex is a significant stop in our journey. We partially started this trip to see what the country has to offer but to also consider where we might want to live one day. Long story short, a year and a half ago we found the city of Apex and have since romanticized the idea of living there - partially because North Carolina is a beautiful state and partially because the grass is greener on the other side kind of thing. So of course when we mapped out our drive, Apex was on the list and to commemorate the monumental moment of getting here, it also marks the halfway point in our road trip (that was a happy accident - yes I just used Bob Ross's words. no shame).
We took some time going through different neighborhoods to get a feel for the city. Apex seemed a lot smaller than expected. Population-wise it's bigger than the city we live in now, but because of all the trees, it's hard to see where the city really is. Everything is hidden which I'm not used to.

As we drove we noticed brand new neighborhoods with model homes so we stopped and walked through them. Ahhh...model homes are so tricky. They show you the possibilities...every upgrade. Every new feature a home can offer, but it always costs you. We fell in love with the home and they always make you walk through it first before they tell you the price - like I said, tricky. Ya... totally out of our price range, but hey, it was still fun to walk through it and get ideas for our own home.
Commentary by Z: Probably a good thing they balance the fun things with non fun things at open houses. Fun thing: walking through an expensive house with all the upgrades and marveling at all the space and cool things. Not fun thing: Salesmen trying to sell you that house.
Dinner was at the Mellow Mushroom. We typically try to stay away from chains, but we kept seeing this one everywhere in the south and saw good reviews so we decided to check it out. It's a pizza place - sit down - and not too expensive. Overall we really liked the pizza! If you're only passing through the south it's probably not worth spending one of your meals on, but if you're here for awhile then you should go for it. Day 2 in Raleigh and we decided to go downtown once Zack was finished with work. We left during rush hour and it didn't even feel like rush hour! There was definitely traffic but nothing that made me want to flip out - score! We ate at Gravy, a little Italian restaurant right by the State Capitol. Zack got the Lasagna - classic - and I got Campanelle. Both were super yummy! 10/10 would recommend to a friend.
Commentary by Z: Anytime we can avoid traffic is +1 for me. Growing up near San Diego I've come to really appreciate places where the freeway system doesn't practically shut down during rush hour.
Since we are in the capitol city of North Carolina, we naturally had to visit the State Capitol building. Turns out it was about a block away from where we had dinner so that was convenient, even though we walked right past it and didn't even notice it! The building wasn't very big but the grounds were really pretty with different statues and monuments to remember war (WWWI,WWWI, Korean War, etc) and important figures (good ole George Washington). It's been really fun to see all the different state capitol buildings, for some reason we both assumed that all capitol buildings looked the same. Utah and Denver's buildings look very much like the classic dome-and-wings style, but some are very unique!
Thoughts about Raleigh so Far?
The city has a lot going on downtown with museums, shoppings, and restaurants. We unfortunately didn't have time to check out all these places, but I would have loved to stop in a museum. The North Carolina Museum of History was right by the state capitol and looked really interesting - I would have wanted to go there. The city is clean, not to much traffic and it seems like everyone owns a dog down here. So. Many. Dogs. That's my kind of city!
Commentary by Z: My favorite thing is how many well-kept public parks they have. We've driven past and also walked through several, and they're all so nice! There's also hiking trails everywhere, which we love. Could use a little more of that in Utah!
